Three Yawns for AWAKENED

I am decidedly a night owl--as I'm sure many of you minions are as well--and so, the worst time of the day for me is that agonizing ledge that we all seem to find ourselves on when we first open our sleep-crusted eyes in the morning.  For a few (more than a few, in my case) hazy moments, I am listless, in-coherent, and just about half-dead.

This is how I found the eighth installment of the House of Night Series by PC and Kristin Cast.  AWAKENED is exactly as the title says.  It's meandering, listless, and all in all just not fully there.

For those of you who are not up to speed with the HON series, AWAKENED opens with Zoey having just made her way back from the Otherworld, a place that she'd been flung into when her human consort, Heath, was abruptly murdered, and thus shattering her soul.  She's traumatized and still not quite herself, but evil doesn't take a day off even though she is in sore need of a little recuperation.  Unfortunately for Zoey and her friends, Neferet is back in Tulsa and still up to her evil old tricks.

And, that my friends is all I'm going to say about what happens in this novel.  I don't want to give any spoilers.

HOWEVER, I will say this:  AWAKENED may not have had the flash, bang, sizzle that the previous HON books had, but that's okay.  This was more of a connector book.  A lot of things were introduced, back stories and character choices that will undoubtedly affect the ending of this series.  For me, while I still hungered for more, I was satisfied with this installment...at least enough to be appeased until the next book, DESTINED comes out in November.  **sigh** That'll be a long wait.

How about all you fine folks? Have you read AWAKENED yet?  Were you disappointed with it or did you see the little strings that the author started dangling in front of us?  I'd love to hear from you in the comments!

  2. i hadn't really heard much about this series until friday, when you explained it all to me karla, so i've added it to my TBR list, however it's not at the top which means it may take awhile for me to get there.....

i find it interesting, though, that you're okay with a book that's "just a connector" book. is that what a long running series is allowed to do? shouldn't each book be so good it could stand on its own?

    happy waiting until november!

  3. Abby, sadly, there are many long-running series that I've read where there are one or two books that (while certainly had a plot and action while furthering the story) were more of what I call "connector" books. AWAKENED (for me) was a connector. Yes, there was action; there was emotional upheaval, but at the end of the day, what I came away from this book with was the knowledge that more was brewing and not much else...hence, the term connector. :(
