For October, Book Hungry is as SWEET AS SIN

First of all, let's thank Ms. Patty Blount for this month's selection. *crowd cheers as Patty takes her bow and walks off with trophy made of chocolate*  Yeah, if only that was how we rolled every month, right?  Actually, no, that wouldn't be a good thing. We'd all end up on those Half-Ton Writer*** shows that Discovery Fit & Health televises every other day.

But, I digress.  On with the Book Hungry show!

The Book: SWEET AS SIN
The Author: Inez Kelley
The Publisher:  Carina Press

Summary (as stolen from Amazon):
John Murphy is tormented by nightmares. A bestselling young-adult author, he writes the ultimate fantasy: stories where good always triumphs. He knows better. His past has shown him the worst in people—and in himself. When he moves next door to the sexy, vibrant Livvy—a woman completely unlike his usual one-night stands—he's driven to explore every curve of her delicious body.

Pastry chef Livvy knows that giving in to the temptation that is John Murphy won't lead to anything permanent, but she deserves a passionate summer fling. John discovers she's as sweet as the confections she bakes while Livvy slowly unravels his secrets. But what will happen when she uncovers them all?

My Thoughts:
After finishing this book, I was more than a little conflicted (still am, to be honest).  At first, I really didn't care for John.  To be honest, he was a bit of a douchebag.  Right from page one, I kept thinking, 'I don't like you' and the extent of his douchebaggery made me not really care for Livvy since she kept coming back to him.  I wanted to shake her and tell her that gorgeous or not, this guy was not for her.

BUT...

and that's a big BUT there people.  What you don't know about this tale from the Amazon blurb is that this book holds a story within the story, one that will pull you in and keep in enthralled.  You see, minions, John is the famed JB Flanigan, and his stories of Jondi, Thorn, Andros, and now Vory are America's answer to Harry Potter.  Seriously.  I've said this numerous times already, but I really, really, REALLY wish Inez would write those books.  The little snips of the monster story not only carried my interest through, but shed light into John's past.

And, let's face it.  John is damaged with a capital D.  He's gone through some terrible traumas, and there is no way he'd end up any other way than he did.  So, I will admit that while I didn't like him in the beginning, I grew to understand him there at the end.  I just wished that the understanding would've come a little sooner, as I spent the majority of the novel shaking my fist at the man, and then at Livvy because I just couldn't believe she'd stay for all his crap.  At the end, though, I was glad she did, because they both deserved a happily ever after.

Also, Livvy makes some killer desserts that I really need to try.  A Chocolate Orgasm?  Heck yeah. Count me in!

How about all you fun folks?  Have you read this or any or Inez Kelley's books?  Do share.  Also, please sign my petition to get her to write the Jondi, Thorn and Vory books.  Enough pressure and she has to cave...right?

***Okay, so there's no such thing as the Half-Ton Writer show on Discovery, but they do have Half-Ton Teen, Half-Ton Mom, and Half-Ton Man, so it wouldn't surprise me if they came out with a writer version. I'm just saying.

  1. A chocolate trophy? For me? Why, OF COURSE, I accept.

And a petition is a great idea!

  2. i completely agree with everything you said right up to the chocolate trophy for patty.

of course, you are much more articulate than me, so thank you for voicing my opinion too, especially the part about the ending bringing about a better understanding of john (and also, somewhat, of livvy). i just wish this had come sooner because it's not that much fun spending the majority of the book disliking the main characters!

  3. You said it way better than I did. Although I thought he was a dick in the beginning, I found myself routing for this guy. Maybe because you feel the connection between him and the author. No matter how bad he was Inez just wouldn't let us dislike him.

PS...who make up these word verifications? Seriously? Subatily? WTF is that?
