Book Hungry Talks to GOD

The Book: THE LAST TESTAMENT: A MEMOIR
The Author: GOD (of course...DUH...but also with David Javerbaum)
The Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Date of First Publication: November 1, 2011

Summary (as jacked from Amazon):

Over the course of his long and distinguished career, god has literally seen it all. And not just seen. In fact, the multi-talented deity has played a pivotal role in many major events, including the Creation of the universe, the entirety of world history, the life of every human being who has ever lived, and the successful transitioning of American Idol into the post–Simon Cowell era.
Now, as the earth he has godded so magnificently draws to a Mayan-induced close, God breaks his 1,400-year literary silence with his final masterpiece, The Last Testament.
As dictated to his mortal amanuensis, 11-time Emmy Award–winning comedy writer David Javerbaum, God looks back with unprecedented candor on his time in the public sector. He takes us behind the scenes of Genesis, setting the record (un)straight on the real first couple, Adam and Steve, and challenging long-held notions about the viability of containing a phylogenetically complete double bestiary within a 450,000-cubic-cubit watercraft. For the first time, he breaks his silence on Jesus Christ, shedding light on a father-son relationship as heartwarming as Will and Jaden Smith’s. And he reveals his true feelings about his third great faith, Islam, WHICH ARE NOTHING BUT POSITIVE AND RESPECTFUL.
But The Last Testament doesn’t just look back. It also offers God’s perspectives on the perennial quagmires of love, marriage, and smiting. And he takes an 27.99 unfiltered look at contemporary society, addressing such hot-button topics as:
• Why he loves America
• What he listens for in a good prayer
• Which sports teams he really roots for
• Which celebrities are totally gay
Sometimes preachy, sometimes holier-than-thou, but always lively, The Last Testament is a tale of courage, adversity, and triumph. It’s the ultimate celebrity autobiography, sure to appeal to not only hardcore God fans and “worshipers,” but to anyone who’s ever had total omnipotence. If you place complete faith in the literal truth of one book written by God, make it The Last Testament.

My Thoughts:

Let me preface this by saying that I am Catholic, born, raised, and now as an "adult" (I use this term loosely cuz well, we all know how I am) I see the inside of a church on a semi-regular basis. Which is to say that in addition to Christmas and Easter* services, I'm also darkening the doorsteps of God's house roughly 12 Sundays a year**.  I think once a month enough to keep me in good standing ;)

So, that said, when Patty chose this book for our November selection, I had my reservations.  Not that I am easily offended.  I mean--HELLO?--have you met me?  Exactly my point.  But, I could see how this would be a controversial selection to review, especially since I began this blog with the promise that I would never, ever, ever talk politics or religion here.

And, I will be keeping this promise, friends.  Yes, this book pokes fun at religion...and politics...and sports...and celebrities...and the Mayans.  Boy, does God have a love/hate thing for the Mayans!  Oh, and let's not forget the temper tantrum of Titanic proportions.

This was a fun read.  Was it a tiny bit on the offensive side?  Well, yes...if you're one of those overly-sensitive types who spends their whole day screaming about how other people who do not have the same values as you are going to Hell or whatever your equivalent is.

If you're not one of those, then you will probably find this book as entertaining as I did.  The story of Adam and "Steve" cracked my shit up*** to the point that I had to read it aloud to a friend.  The tale of the great flooding, Noah's ark, and that rascally duo Pillow and Sparky.  The real reason behind the razing of Sodom and Gamorrah = PRICELESS.

And of course, The Mayans.

So, how about all of you fun folks, have you read God's memoir?  What did you think?  I'd love to hear all about it in the comments.  Then, when you're done here, hop on over to my other Book Hungry girls' blogs (see side bar under the picture of the book sandwich) and get their takes!

*I have been known to go to more than one service on Easter Sunday.  Sue me
**You're not the only one who just had a near stoke upon reading this revelation. EVERYONE is surprised when they hear I not only go to church but am not smited the moment I walk through the doors
***Um...yeah. That was like a colorful description. Not literal. well...maybe it is, but I never looked to see cuz well...EW!!!
