Well folks, I haven't done a Friday Five in a while, and a Road-Trip Wednesday in even longer. Today, I'm going to smoosh the two into one fantabulous post. So without further adieu, I give you:
My Top Five Reads of 2010!!!

In the I only bought/read this cuz an agent tweeted so much about it category: EPITAPH ROAD by David Patneaude: I must admit that I only purchased this book because the lovely Elana Roth tweeted and tweeted and tweeted such rave reviews about it. And, guess what folks? It didn't live up to the hype. It SURPASSED her glowing praise. If you haven't read it yet and you like dystopian...well, what are you waiting for? Go get it!
In the Books I picked up at the store and then promptly passed up like a bazillion times before actually buying it category: The HUNGER GAMES trilogy by Suzanne Collins. Yes, I said trilogy. We all know from previous posts what a vain book reader(why yes, I do judge books by their covers) I am. But, once I got over the stark cover art, HOLY WOW. If you are one of the very, very few who have been living under a rock in the middle of the Sahara, let me tell you that you are missing something so amazing I can't even talk about it without making this a 60K word blog post.
In the Why did I even bother putting on makeup this morning because I just cried it all off category: This one is a tie. I just can't decide so, I'm going to give you two. LOVE YOU HATE YOU MISS YOU by Elizabeth Scott and THIRTEEN REASONS WHY by Jay Asher. Guh. Heartbreaking tales, both of them.
In the Friends don't let friends read alone category: The CHAOS WALKING trilogy by Patrick Ness. I have to admit that when Abby Mumford told me about these books, I did run right out to the library and pick them up. The first line of THE KNIFE OF NEVER LETTING GO was very intriguing, but the style of writing kind of threw me and I set the book aside. A month later as the due date approached, I picked the books back up and said, "Self, you will read this, at least the first one in the series." And HOLY WOW, am I ever glad that I did. Once I settled into the writing and the world of Todd and his faithful dog, Manchee, I was trapped. I finished all three books within a matter of days. Quite a feat considering each book is over 600 pages. GREAT GREAT GREAT reads. Thank you, Abby for browbeating me into reading this!
In the Friendship, Death, and Eating Disorders never sounded so beautifully poetic category: WINTERGIRLS by Laurie Halse Anderson. Really, I shouldn't have to say anything more. LAH is a brilliant writer. Anything she produces is pure poetry.
Honorable Mention: In the I have literally no words to describe how this book affected me category: FORBIDDEN by Tabitha Suzuma. I've already ranted about this book in previously, and more than a month later, I still have no words for how this book made me feel.

ReplyDeleteI know! I must be the last one left on the planet. But I don't really care for dystopians. They tend to make me sad, and I don't like being sad.

ReplyDelete(2) YAY! i spawned a category. and it's true. the CHAOS WALKING trilogy should not be read alone. i also forced my two sisters to read them. sister J read and love. sister E hated KNIFE, so didn't read the others. maybe you and i can tag team her into finishing?
For me this year it was the reading I did for friends as a beta. There are so many talented tweeps out there.

I read and loved WINTERGIRLS this year also.
